Man posing as newspaper representative in local scam

Monday, January 23, 2006

A young man posing as a representative of Carroll County Newspapers has been attempting to solicit money from unwary citizens by going door-to-door to collect for subscriptions without authorization.

CCN Publisher Bob Moore said the young man has no affiliation with the newspaper.

The scam came to light earlier this week when Moore received a phone call from a resident who reported the young man had stopped by her mother's Locust Heights apartment in Berryville last Saturday.

According to the information provided, the young man, thought to be in his teens, showed up at her door, said he was a representative of Carroll County Newspapers, and asked for $20 to cover the cost of a subscription.

"He was apparently making the rounds," Moore said. "He had a newspaper satchel, but no complimentary copies of the paper, or no official identification."

The young man reportedly asked the woman to make out the check to him, not the newspaper.

"We have not hired anyone to solicit door-to-door," Moore said, "and any checks should always be made out to the paper, not an individual, as he asked.

"Fortunately," Moore continued, "she didn't write a check. She contacted her daughter, who contacted us.

"We want the public to know that if anyone sees this man, they should call the police."
