Holiday Island Community Church launches studies in art, Islam

Holiday Island -- Starting in January the Holiday Island Community Church, at 188 Stateline Drive, will offer general education classes to the public in the new Ellen and Herman Cook Center for Continuing Ministries.

A six-week course, Basic Skills in Drawing, will be conducted by Elaine Ostroot beginning Jan. 4. Everyone is welcome, and no requisite skill or experience is necessary. The six classes will be held on Wednesdays, Jan 4-25 and Feb. 1-8, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Participants are responsible for acquiring the text book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain." a workbook by Betty Edwards. The workbook can be purchased via internet at amazon.com for $12.21. An arts supplies list is available at the church, telephone (479) 253-8200, or from Ostroot, 253-2368. It is the responsibility of participants to furnish their own supplies. There is no charge for the class, and classes will meet in the craft room on the lower level of the Cook center.

A 12-session class, A Study of Islam, will meet in Haller Hall of the Cook center beginning on Jan. 9. The Monday sessions will meet from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Contents for the study will be presented on DVDs that feature world-renown scholars. Discussion facilitators will be Marquis Jones assisted by Pastor Allen Thrasher. Others in the community church who have lived or worked in Muslim states will share personal knowledge and experience.

The program is free and open to those of the public who wish to strengthen their Christian faith and gain insight into current world events.. The only prerequisite for the class is an open mind.
