EUREKA SPRINGS -- The Highlander junior high basketball teams couldn't get a win from four salty Alpena Leopard teams Monday night, but the junior high girls were close.

Coach Aaron Hall's Junior Lady Highlanders lost 29-23 in a game that went down to the wire, leaving them 2-2. Coach Daniel Cornelison's junior boys went scoreless in the second half and lost 36-13, leaving them 1-2.

Alpena swamped the Eureka seventh-graders, winning 21-4 in boys action and 17-0 in girls play, with the teams playing two 10-minute halves with the clock running.

"In the second quarter one of their best girl, Savage, got in foul trouble and had four by the half and that helped," Coach Hall said. "In the third, we turned up our press and did okay. We had our chances.

"We missed five free throws in the third, and multiple layups. We didn't do a good job finishing, but I can't fault their effort."

Scoring- ES- Kelly Clarke- 6; 4-s- Shelby Sebby, Megan Handley, Miranda Smith; Jane Soriano- 3; Alyssa Worley- 2. ALP- Smith- 13; Sims- 8; Cluer- 6; Savage- 2.

The Highlanders' offense broke down in the third quarter and Coach Cornelison sent a new squad in to try and execute the plays, without much success.

For Alpena, Nicholas had 12, Gibbins 6, Blackburn 5, Keeton 4, Martinez 3, and Hudson, Shelton, Belt and McNair 2 each.
