Southern Heights named relay center for international shoebox Christmas
BERRYVILLE -- Carroll County's relay center for the 2005 Operation Christmas Child is Southern Heights Baptist Church at 279 Hwy. 221 South, Berryville.
The church will be collecting shoe box gifts Monday, Nov. 14 through Sunday, Nov. 20. Hours are 9 a.m. to noon and 5 to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays; 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, and 3 to 4 p.m. on Sundays.
The shoe box gift program has been a standard effort of various churches in the county for several years.
Operation Christmas Child is an outreach of Franklin Graham's Samaritan's Purse ministry.
Throughout North America, church members collect items for the shoe boxes throughout the year, packing them, along with $5 to cover distribution costs. The boxes are collected locally and taken to one of four collection sites in the United States.
The Berryville operation will take the gift boxes to John Brown University (JBU), a Christian college in Siloam Springs. From JBU the boxes will go to Graham's operations center in Tennessee.
The boxes are distributed to children in more than 90 countries throughout the world. Last year 7.4 million boxes were shipped, and this year's goal is 8 million.
The shoe boxes can be wrapped but must be easy to inspect for liquids and war-related toys, which are not permitted.
Boxes will include Christian literature outlining the salvation message in the local language where they are distributed.
Southern Heights Baptist will serve as the relay center for all of Carroll and surrounding counties.
