Lady Bobcats up record to 2-1 with wins
BERRYVILLE -- The Lady Bobcat varsity volleyball team notched two wins this week, moving their season record to 2-1 with victories over the Alpena Lady Leopards on Monday and the Marshall Lady Bobcats on Tuesday.
Plus, the junior high girls got their first win of the season on Tuesday against Marshall.
MONDAY, AUG. 29
25-9, 25-11, 25-10
Berryville wasted no time in this match, setting spiking and serving winners to run away with the match.
Emily Bell had six kills and 17 scoring serves, Mahalie Armstrong had 10 scoring serves, and Coach Emily Webb said, "Rain Campbell was solid on defense."
"We communicated as a team, got on the floor and got loose balls," Webb said. "Melissa Koerber was all over the floor. Michelle Wyas and Tori Wilson had six scoring serves each, and Emily Ray was solid on defense. We had some good sets and did finish those off. Everybody played."
Jr. High action
25-22, 24-26, 9-15
The junior high girls won a close one and lost a close one, with the final game finishing at 15 points in a shortened format.
"Jessica Costner and Krystal Changus had good serves that scored, and every body played," Coach Webb said.
TUESDAY, AUG. 30
25-20, 25-20, 25-22
Berryville took the match in three close games, but was in control throughout.
"In the first game, we handled every ball and set it up," Coach Webb said. "Emily Bell and Rain Campbell were spiking it down." Campbell had a reported 11 kills and Bell nine.
"In the second game we were down six, then Mahalie Armstrong served eight in a row to give us the lead. She stepped up," Webb said. Armstrong also had a reported six kills.
"The third game was close, but Marshall was down." Webb said. "Our girls kept their focus. They knew they had to win the game.
"Summer Williamson and Katie Tennant, our setters, got the second ball and got it to the net." Williamson had a reported 32 good sets and Tennant 20.
"Autumn Campbell played her role well, getting where she needed to be, and communicated well. We played more as a team last night than we did all last year," Webb said.
A solid Marshall team made few mistakes against a Berryville squad that Coach Webb said "Is learning to play together."
Tomo Fukao, an exchange student from Japan, had some good serves and sets in the match, which a big crowd cheered heartily.

18-25, 25-23, 25-19
"I was so proud of them," Coach Webb said. "It was their first win, and the second game any of them have played."
Coach named Jessica Costner, Rachael Henderson, Megan Gibbins, Aubree Fry, Krystal Changus, Chelsea Parker, Elise Holman, and Candace Eaves as players that helped in the win.
