Quick police response foils burglary

Berryville Police Chief Dave Muniz checks out the four-wheelers which were targets of thieves Friday night.

BERRYVILLE ---- Two suspected thieves spent New Year's Day in jail after five Berryville officers responded to an alarm at Williams Ford Tractor on Dec. 31 at 9:54 p.m..

Chief Dave Muniz said, "We had a really quick response time, and Officer Daniel Crawford was first on the scene. He noticed a large whole in the fence, and as other officers arrived, including Sgt. Shannon Pearson, Kevin Disheroon, and reservists Bob Bouly and Rob Wintercorn arrived, the suspects were taken into custody.

One of the new Polaris four-wheelers was already loaded in a pickup when the arrests were made.

Matthew L. Williams, 19, Berryville, and David L. Smith, 21, of Berryville, were both charges with breaking or entering.

Chief Muniz said the two four-wheelers were worth in excess of $12,000. He praised his officers for their swift response, and the reserves for coming out on New Year's eve to help.

The two suspects were set to be arraigned Monday morning.
