CLETA JANE ARMSTRONG, a lifelong resident of Carroll County, was born May 7, 1908, in Dean, Ark., a daughter of William Marion and Mary (Carr) Whiteley. She died Monday, June 28, 2004, in Berryville at the age of 96.

Mrs. Armstrong was a homemaker. She was a Christian and a member of the Dean United Baptist Church. She loved flowers, gardening, crocheting, and making quilts.

She is survived by her daughters, Mildred Hockett and Dixie Evans both of Berryville; one daughter-in-law, Dixie Armstrong of Berryville; two sisters, Mabel Webb of Berryville and Ruth Webb of Rudd; her brother, Monroe Whiteley of Oklahoma; ten grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; other relatives; and a host of friends.

She was united in marriage with Rev. W. Hans Armstrong, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents, William and Mary Whiteley; her son, Bill Armstrong; and seven brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 1, 2004, at the Charles M. Nelson Memorial Chapel with Bro. Jerry Spurlock officiating. Interment followed in the Dean Cemetery under the direction of Nelson Funeral Service. Online condolences may be sent to the family at nelsonfuneral.com.
