Bobcat golfers take on ASGA match play event

Monday, June 28, 2004

Two Berryville Bobcat golfers are keeping their games sharp this summer by playing Arkansas State Golf Association (ASGA) matches across the state.

Dustin Walker and Brent Moore have played in four tournaments so far this summer, with the latest being the ASGA Junior Match Play Championship at the Stuttgart Country Club this week.

Match play is a hole-by-hole shootout. The player with the lowest score on each hole wins that hole, unless there is a tie, then no advantage is earned. So whether the duo shoots high or low, a player still has a chance to win that hole.

In the qualifying round to determine how the players will be matched up, Walker and Moore shot in the low 80s, not their best effort. That set them against players who had scored lower in the qualifying round, which in effect gives the player with a better score a better chance to advance.

In first round action, Walker defeated Johnson, 3-1, while Moore was defeated by Faitz, 1-up, knocking him from the tournament. Walker was ousted the next day by Murphy, 4-2.

Just a handful of golfers out of the 64 reached the third round. Little Rock's Michael Barre and Jonesboro's Will Little battled through 25 holes, including a seven-hole playoff before Barre hit a 12-foot birdie putt to end the sudden-death playoff and take the match play title.
