Bobcats put the broom to Tigers,tearn No. 1 seed at district tourney

Coach Tracy Jones' Berryville Bobcat baseball team swept the Prairie Grove Tigers in a doubleheader last Thursday at the Grove, keeping them on top of the 1AAA Conference.

Berryville took the first game 11-5, then came back to take the second 10-5. Those wins moved their season record to 9-8 overall, 8-1 in league play, good for the top spot.

At the 1AAA conference meeting on Monday, Berryville was declared the conference overall champ and given the No. 1 seed in the 1AAA District Tournament that begins this Friday.

Berryville will play Saturday at noon, with Green Forest facing Farmington on Thursday, at 6:30 p.m. in Gentry..

Coach Jones said there was a lot of tension when the game started, but the Bobcats led off with three straight hits.

"I knew it would be a good game after that," Jones said, although his team fell behind 4-1 early. "We really played well, and started hitting in the third, fourth, and fifth innings.

"Steven Trulove had a grand slam home run and was 3 of 4 at bat. Drew Ray went 3 of 4, and catcher Heath Neal had two assists (throw outs)."

Henry Adams pitched 5 innings, then Trulove finished the last 2 innings.

Game 2

"We put a lot of hits together," Jones said. "It was 4-3 in the fifth inning, then with one out we got five runs off a walk and four straight hits."

Joseph Boley pitched the full 7 innings, and had 11 strikeouts against 7 walks.
