JV boys stop Huntsville 3-1, Camacho goals help Lady Tigers

The Green Forest soccer teams opened their season Tuesday in Tiger Stadium with non-conference games against the Huntsville Eagles.

The boys match was a junior varsity game which Green Forest won, 3-1. Coach Marc McCutcheon said the team was down 1-0 at halftime, then loosened up in the second half and scored three goals.

"We had a great time. It was a lot of fun," Coach McCutcheon said. "Raul Pulido scored our first goal, and our goalie, Ulises Rangel, got our second on a penalty kick, and Frank Berlanga got the third on a deflection off his leg right in front of the goal."

Defensively, Coach McCutcheon said Henry Pineda and Tyler Watson dominated on defense, and that Pineda handled the ball well and controlled the offense.

The Lady Tigers lost 8-2, but came back after being down 5-0 at halftime and scored two goals. A tough Huntsville squad finished second in the league last year, and got some goals early.

Coach Jennifer Bassett made some adjustments at halftime, including moving Mayra Farias to goalie, where she defended well, with Liliana Camacho and Maria Camacho both scoring goals that period.

"The girls played hard and didn't give up," Coach Bassett said. "We had some problems early, then made some changes. We were more aggressive as the game went on, and that helped us.

"Our second goal by Maria Camacho was the result of great teamwork right in front of the goal, but Huntsville's defense kept the ball off their end. They kept sending it long and got behind us some."

Bassett was positive after the team's first game, pointing out that the team scored their most goals ever, and that everyone on the roster got to play, and all were assets.

"Juana Valdez was awesome on defense, and Sarah Huddleston was our goal kicker. She's got a good foot."
