Lady Tigers get 1st win of season!

Monday, December 15, 2003

It was just a matter of time before new coach Jim Goins got his new Lady Tigers team to find the old way of winning basketball games ---- hard work.

The Green Forest senior girls fought off a comeback by the Pea Ridge Lady Blackhawks and earned their first win of the season on Tuesday night, a 42-30 victory.

Coach Mike Hampton's senior boys weren't so fortunate, as they faced a loaded Blackhawk team that was 5-1 when the dust settled. Green Forest lost 55-19, and is 0-6 on the season.

In eighth-grade action, the Tiger boys won 44-24, with Lucas Graham scoring 14. The girls also won, 36-4.

5-4, 16-8, 25-19, 42-30

"We had a soul-searching team meeting after the Omaha game, and this time they played with all their heart and soul," Coach Goins said. "We also had great support from the home crowd, which was fuel to the fire."

It was a rough game, with Pea Ridge hitting the boards, and Green Forest players, hard. Officials let them mix it up the second half, which was when senior guard Terri Tidyman took over control of the ball, protecting it while getting it to open teammates.

Sophomore LaRae Jones scored eight of her 10 points in the fourth quarter as she took it to the hoop strong.

"LaRae only had eight free throws our first six games. I told her she needed to be more aggressive, and she was, a lot more," Goins said. "Terri did a good job down the stretch, on offense and defense.

"We panicked early in the fourth and had some turnovers, so I called a timeout and let them catch their breath. They kept their composure."

The Lady Tigers got their fast break going in the last minutes of the game, and kept putting points up, to the cheers of the crowd.

Pea Ridge coach Larry Walker said before the game this was one of his better teams, and it was. Tall, athletic, and quick sums up this group of Blackhawks.

"They have the athletes, a good run-and-gun, and a tough full court press," Coach Hampton said. "We gave up four steals and baskets before we got it across halfcourt, and when we did finally, it was a turnover."

All was not dark, however, as Hampton said, "Our sophomores are playing better. Adam Plagge, Guy Joubert, and Aaron Fitchue are improving, and Brett Conner gives us some muscle inside. We're usually outsized, but we do alright in the half court."

The Blackhawks were too big and quick this time, but individual Tigers fought as hard as they could all four quarters.
