Maui softball tourney a hit with Berryville's Carozza
If staying in Carroll County and working all summer isn't your thing, take a page from recent Berryville graduate Allison Carozza's notebook.
Allison decided to spend a week or so playing softball this summer ---- in Maui, Hawaii.
Carozza was originally set to play with an Oklahoma team, but that coach backed out. He didn't desert the girls though, just split them up with other teams. Allison wound up playing on the team from Butler (Kan.) College.
The team was in Hawaii from July 8 through 15, and played four games in the Nokia tournament, winning three of them.
Allison said she played left field and batted in the first two games, but that the college girls were throwing their underhanded pitches 60 mph, as opposed to the 45-50 mph throws she faced in high school.
"I got on base and scored once," she said, "and I pinch ran for the pitcher. I caught two fly balls, and had an RBI."
But it was the extra adventures in Hawaii that brought a smile to her face.
"I went para-sailing and was 800 feet up," Allison said with a big grin. "We went snorkeling and saw an eel, and we stayed at the Westin Maui and saw some famous people.
"I saw Tia and Tamara Maury, who are on the Disney channel, and James Vanderbeek, who was on his honeymoon. We also went shopping every day, and I ate at the Bubba Gump restaurant twice."
All that, and a week in Hawaii to boot. But Allison said she couldn't have done it without the help of a lot of sponsors here at home.
"I just want to say thanks to everyone that helped sponsor my trip," Allison said. "It was great."
