Local man dies in cycle wreck

GREEN FOREST ---- A motorcycle accident north of Green Forest on Tuesday claimed the life of Harold Alan Smith, 56, of Green Forest.

According to State Trooper Kevin Steed, Smith was traveling south on Hwy. 311 driving a 1982 Kawasaki motorcycle when he failed to negotiate a curve and the motorcycle left the road and struck a road sign.

Green Forest first responders were dispatched to the scene at approximately 5:10 p.m. on Tuesday.

The accident occurred near the Head School House, eight miles north of Green Forest. First responders assisted a St. John's ambulance crew.

Trooper Steed said Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is not yet complete.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Athena, who survives him of the home.

Mr. Smith was a veteran of the United States Navy and a member of the Ozark Mountain Community Church near Blue Eye, Mo. He is also survived by two daughters, Synthia Van Gelder and Vanessa Leckard, both of Salinas, Calif.; and his mother, Dolores Smith of Harrison.

Visitation was set Friday at Nelson Chapel in Green Forest, and services are pending in California at a later date. Mr. Smith was born in California.
