Diamond-9 has short stay at state

Berryville's Ryan Rylee let this low pitch go by during action earlier this season at Green Forest. Rylee pitched the last game of the season, a 4-1 loss to Dover on Monday in the opening game of the Class AAA State Tournament, and finished the year with a 4.93 ERA. The Berryville Bobcat baseball team made it to the Class AAA State tournament, playing Dover on Monday, May 5, at the Mills University Studies campus in Little Rock.

But six errors and just three hits made it a short stay as Dover rolled on to a 4-1 victory, ending Berryville's season.

"We came up one game short," Coach Barry Hardin said.

Dover went on to defeat Ashdown, 13-10, then fell to Pulaski Academy 10-1 in the semifinals.

"The kids were nervous," Coach Hardin said. "It was the first time at state for them. Once they got over being nervous, they settled down and played shut-out ball."

Bobcat Steven Trulove went 2 for 3 at bat, and Ryan Rylee went 1 for 3, accounting for all three of Berryville's hits, as Dover's pitching ace, Randy Schrock, did his job well.

"Schrock is a good pitcher, has a decent fast ball, and some movement on his curve ball, but we made poor choices on swings," Coach Hardin said. "We were trying too hard."

Hardin said senior Ryan Rylee pitched a good game, going the full seven innings, facing 33 batters, striking out six, and giving up four unearned runs.

"We laid the groundwork for better things to come," Hardin said. "Getting to state was our goal last year, but we went out in regionals. If we had made it to state last year, it might have been different this time."

Hardin said he felt real good about next year, as they lose just three seniors. Two of them are good pitchers, Rylee and Justin Pittman, but he said their better hitters are coming back.

"Next year, we'll have five seniors and a junior, and all will have two years of experience," Hardin said about the nucleus.
