Highlander golf coach Aaron Hall was beaming from ear to ear Wednesday afternoon after his Eureka Springs team won the Class AA Region 1 golf tournament at the Big Sugar course in Pea Ridge.

Even better, senior Allen Huffman was Medalist, shooting a low 72, and junior Cash Covington fired a hole-in-one on the par-three No. 5.

Zac Folker was second man in for Eureka, carding a 91, making a team total of 163, 12 strokes better than second-place Danville's 175. Lavaca was third at 180.

Sam Dudley shot a 94, and Covington a 97 to round out Eureka's team, which will play in the state golf tournament in Melbourne next week at the Cooper's Hawk course. Dates are May 6-8.

"Allen has been playing real well," Coach Hall said. "He had four birdies and four bogies. Zac was our last man to come in, and I was sweating. He had just one ball left the last four holes. If he had lost it, he would have been disqualified, and he was our next lowest score.

"Cash got his hole-in-one early, with a sand wedge on the par-three, 140-yard No. 5. They said he hit it over the pin, and it was spinning and just backed right in. He may have had trouble concentrating after that."

Rumor has it that after Cash made a phone call home to announce the hole-in-one, another family member was pouting in the back room.

"Sam played solid, but had two bad holes on the front nine, but he's been striking the ball much better," Hall said.
