James E. "Gene" Stanphill
James E. "Gene" Stanphill, 81, of Alpena, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at his home.
He was born Dec. 29, 1921, in Carroll County, son of John Edward and Cora Mae (Larimer) Stanphill.
Mr. Stanphill was a veteran, having served his country with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Alpena, and of the Green Forest Masonic Lodge. Until his retirement, he managed a hardware store in Alpena.
On Sept. 1, 1941, he married Mary (Johnson) Stanphill, who survives him, of the home. He is also survived by his son, Archie Stanphill and wife Brenda; two daughters, Sammy Hooker and husband Dan of Denver, Colo., and Jean Gaddy and husband Jerry of Jefferson City, Mo.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Donald E. Stanphill; four brothers; and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, March 14, at the Nelson Chapel in Green Forest, with the Rev. Mike Widner officiating. Interment will follow in the Alpena Cemetery, under the direction of Nelson Funeral Service.
