Regional tournaments set back by snow storms, ice

Friday, February 28, 2003

Snow, ice, and freezing temperatures forced the Class AAA Region 1 tournament at Ozark, and the Class AA Region 1 tournament at Danville, to be delayed one day, with first-round action to begin on Thursday instead of Wednesday. Finals will now be held on Monday, March 3.

Central Arkansas and the river valley were expected to get additional light snow and possible freezing rain on Wednesday, with more bad weather forecast through the weekend.

Residents in the town of Ozark reported early Wednesday morning that they didn't even have snow on the ground, but teams from northwest Arkansas weren't as fortunate.

A major snowstorm last Saturday, plus temperatures that never broke out of the twenties, and an additional snowfall overnight on Monday, coated roads, making it hard for teams to gather and make the trips.

The Berryville Bobcats and Green Forest Tigers were scheduled to play on Wednesday, with the Lady Bobcats' game originally set for Thursday.

All games were pushed back a day, so the Green Forest Tigers were to play at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday against host Ozark, and the Berryville Bobcats were set for 8:30 p.m. Thursday versus West Fork.

The Lady Bobcats' game against Booneville was to be played on Friday at 4 p.m.

Bill Gossage, athletics director at Ozark, said his tournament has a Web site at that fans can check for updates.

ESHS Principal David Childers reported Wednesday morning that the Highlanders and Lady Highlanders would travel to Russellville that day in order to beat any bad weather on the way, but that play was pushed back a day to Thursday.

The Lady Highlanders were to face top-seeded Magazine (24-1) on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Highlanders would play Friday at 5:30 p.m. versus Hackett.
