Orphea Lee McFerrin Duty
Orphea Lee McFerrin Duty, 103, of Boxley, died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at Carroll Regional Medical Center in Berryville.
She was born June 12, 1898, at Compton, daughter of Benjamin Eugene and Sarah Belle Harp McFerrin.
Mrs. Duty was a lifetime resident of Newton County. She had lived at Boxley since 1909. She served as postmistress at Boxley for 45 years. She was a member of the Boxley Baptist Church since 1914, and she had served as pianist, youth and adult Sunday School teacher during her 88 years of membership.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Duty, in 1944; and by a daughter, Ima Jean Duty Fowler, on December 30, 1980; a son-in-law, Wilson Bunch, on March 22, 2000; twin infant daughters; three brothers; three sisters; and three nephews.
Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Fred Evon Bunch of Kingston, Ina Verne and A.R. Pendergrass of Little Rock, and Nina Lee and Bill Fowler of Boxley; a sister, Mary John McFerrin of Denver, Colo.; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a nephew; and four nieces.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 29, at the Boxley Baptist Church, with the Rev. Claud Williams officiating. Interment followed in the Walnut Grove Cemetery at Boxley, under the direction of Brashears Funeral Home of Huntsville.
Pallbearers were Gary Bunch, Chad Bunch, william Pendergrass, Michael Fowler, Ruben Johnson, Skip Emmett, Cale Emmett, Gary Farmer, Kenny Tomasich, and Fowler Tomasich.
Honorary pallbearers were Bill Duty, Dennis House, Elvin Samuels, Dr. Ivan H. Box and the staff of Meadowview Healthcare and Rehab in Huntsville.
