Sylvia Helen Becker
Sylvia Helen Becker, 83, of 5 College Street, Eureka Springs, Arkansas, formerly of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, in Eureka Springs.
A private service will be held for family and friends.
Sylvia was born October 12, 1918, in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, the daughter of the late George and Marie (Braeger) Klenk.
Valedictorian of her Cedarburg High School Class, Sylvia graduated from Milwaukee State Teachers College. She married George C. Becker on June 21, 1941. She taught Spanish, German and English, and directed Drama in her early career as a high school teacher in Phillips, Wisconsin, and Port Edwards, Wisconsin. She was later a substitute teacher in the Stevens Point area. She found particular satisfaction teaching children's literature at the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point, where she excelled as an inspirational teacher until she retired in 1979.
In the years following retirement, the Beckers lived in Rockport, Texas; Rogers, Arkansas; and Kissimmee, Florida, until settling in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, in 1993.
An extraordinary cook, a wonderful writer, and homemaker par excellence, Sylvia is lovingly survived by her husband, George, and three sons, Kenneth of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, Dale and Sharron of Seligman, Missouri, and David and Pattie of Stevens Point, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her brother, Floyd Klenk, and sister, Amanda Uhlig.
