Ervin F. Umland, 91, of Chenoa, Ill., formerly of Eureka Springs, died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at BroMenn Regional Medical Center in Normal, Ill. He was born Jan. 7, 1911, in Birnamwood, Wis., the son of Ferdinand and Emilie Umland. On Sept. 2, 1939, in Gridley, Ill., he married Martha Virginia Hoobler, who survives him. ...

Spring football practices end for area high school teams

Carroll County high schools wrapped up their spring football practices last week, with the Berryville Bobcats getting in 10 days, five in pads. The Green Forest Tigers worked their days in around bad weather, five of them also in pads. "This was our first year in pads," Coach Bill Gotto said. "We haven't done it the other two years due to injuries and small numbers. It cleared some areas up, and we know a little more about our depth."...

by David McNeal The Memorial Day weekend is always a big event at my house, due to my mother and father. Dad was a World War II and Korean War veteran who was the ranking Warrant Officer in Arkansas when he retired with 34 years of service. Mom's birthday is May 30 and we always have a big party and family reunion for her, held early this year at DeGray Lake near Arkadelphia. She's 89 this year, which means she has reached two of her life goals...
