Joe Pesci and Robert DeNiro in "The Irishman"
NEW YORK — Where oh where is Jimmy Hoffa? Oh, where oh where could he be?
Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman" premieres at the opening night of this year's New York Film Festival aka #NYFF57 at Lincoln Center. The A-list cast includes Robert De Niro as Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, Al Pacino as Jimmy Hoffa and Joe Pesci as Russell Bufalino.
Scorsese made it clear in an interview that Netflix was the only entity willing to champion the $125 million project.
“No one else did. No one else did," Scorsese said. "We decided to make it with the understanding that it’ll maybe never be shown in theaters. They said, ‘You would have a time in theaters.’ A few weeks or whatever, I said fine. The idea was to make the movie, you see.”
The film is based on the best-seller by Charles Brandt "I Heard You Paint Houses: Frank 'The Irishman' Sheeran & Closing the Case on Jimmy Hoffa" (2016).
The 57th New York Film Fest runs September 27 through October 13. For tickets to NYFF57, visit their official website.
