'American Psycho' to transfix audiences Down Under

SYDNEY — "This is not an exit."
"American Psycho The Musical" will slay audiences at the Hayes Theatre Co. in Australia this summer, but there is no reason for fans to abandon all hope. Ticket prices are quite affordable (below), and audiences will have from May 10 to June 9 to see their favorite yuppie, serial killer Patrick Bateman on stage in what is arguably this decade's most decadent and delightful musical theater experience.
The stage production is based on author Bret Easton Ellis' 1991 novel of the same name with its book written by American playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Carrie, The Town That Dread Sundown, Riverdale) and music by Tony Award and Grammy winner Duncan Sheik (Reasons for Living, Spring Awakening, Barely Breathing).
Ben Gerrard (Outland, Wolf Creek 2, Deep Water) won the coveted role of Pat Bateman, and Gerrard is the fifth actor to tackle the role. Christian Bale (The Dark Knight, Public Enemies, Vice) brought Ellis' character to life on the Silver Screen in Mary Harron's "American Psycho" (2000). Michael Kremko briefly appeared as the faceless Bateman at the beginning of the forgettable "American Psycho II: All American Girl" (2002), which wasn't short on talent, but the movie suffered from a poorly-written script. Mila Kunis and William Shatner both starred in the massive flop.
For "American Psycho's" first staged production in London, the 2013 project cast Matt Smith (Doctor Who, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Terminator Genisys) to terrify London crowds. The 2016 Broadway version enjoyed success thanks to a riveting performance by Benjamin Walker (Kinsey, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, The Choice). Walker's portrayal of Mr. Bateman is by far and away the most complex, comedic and satisfying of the aforementioned actors, but each thespian (with the exception of Kremko) brought a uniqueness to Patrick.
And now Aussies will have the chance to enjoy this uniquely dark and comedic musical. "American Psycho The Musical" is slated to run from Friday, May 10 through Sunday, June 9 at the 111-seat Hayes Theatre in Potts Point, Sydney, Australia.
