Actor John Gavin passes away at the age of 86. According to his wife's manager Budd Burton:
"He died this morning after a long illness."
Gavin was best known by genre film fans for his role of Sam in Alfred Hitchcock's classic horror flick "Psycho" (1960).
Gavin was even considered to replace model turned actor George Lazenby as James Bond before Sean Connery agreed to return as 007 in "Diamonds Are Forever" (1971).
Far more than a thespian, Gavin served as President Ronald Regan's original Ambassador to Mexico. Gavin's other Silver Screen credits include "Imitation of Life" (1959), "Spartacus" (1960) and "Midnight Lace" (1960).
Gavin also guest starred on many popular television shows including "The Love Boat" (1977), "Hart to Hart" (1980) and "Fantasy Island" (1978 - 1981). TMZ reports that Gavin died via complications brought on by pneumonia and leukemia.
