2013 SUMMER MOVIE PREVIEW: MAY 31

June 20, 1975 marked the dawn of the modern day blockbuster motion picture with the opening of Steven Spielberg's "Jaws." This clever thriller/horror classic, grossing over $470 million worldwide, ushered in a new age when it came to the summer months and "Jaws" made movies in the months of May, June, July and August relevant.
With last summer a mere afterthought, it definitely left its mark with blockbusters like "The Avengers" and "The Dark Knight Rises" to live up to this summer and smaller features akin to "Ted" and "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" to look forward to.
With the vast number of great movies to see this summer, I am dedicating a single blog to each week of each month of the summer of 2013.
Here's a look at the blockbuster films for the final week of the month of May you can't wait to see and the other diamonds in the rough that may slip up and just surprise you. Check out video (below) for each of my summer picks.
"AFTER EARTH" Director/writer M. Night Shyamalan returns with his epic vision of a future in which the planet Earth is devoid of human lifeforms. 1,000 years after our planet is evacuated, General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) and his 13-year-old son Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) crash land on a very inhospitable Earth when their ship is damaged in an asteroid storm.
Kitai, wanting to be a great soldier like his father, finally gets the chance to prove himself in the most unforgiving of situations. Cypher is severely injured in the crash and it is up to Kitai to retrieve the ship's rescue beckon, and send for help, before his father succumbs to his life-threatening wounds.
The film also stars Zoe Kravitz, Sophie Okonedo, Glenn Morshower and Jaden Martin.
"NOW YOU SEE ME" A group of magicians use their keen intellect and mastery of magic to seemingly serve as modern day Robin Hoods. The group robs banks during their spectacular performances and then pass the stolen money on to their eager audiences. The team finds themselves threatened though when they land on the radar of both the FBI and Interpol.
The film stars Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Morgan Freeman, Dave Franco, Michael Caine and Melanie Laurent; Louis Leterrier directs.
"AMERICAN MARY" Opening in limited release, this horror film follows the journey of med school dropout Mary Mason (Katharine Isabelle). As Mary struggles with her chosen life, she is lured down a dark path that leads to the ghastly world of underground surgeries.
"American Mary" is written and directed by Sylvia and Jen Soska. The film also stars Antonio Cupo and Paula Lindberg.
"I DO" Jack (David W. Ross) is a British foreigner taking care of his deceased brother Peter's (Grant Bowler) family. Faced with the threat of being deported back to London, Jack marries his best friend Ali (Jamie Sigler).
Both Jack and Ali are gay though, so the marriage is strictly for show so that Jack can help out his sister-in-law Mya (Alicia Witt) and young niece Tara (Jessica Tyler Brown).
The situation is further complicated when Jack meets Spanish architect Mano Alfaro (Maurice Compte) and falls in love with him. The film is directed by Glenn Gaylord.
