Paramount Pictures has released the first movie poster (right) and the synopsis (below) for next summer's highly anticipated "Star Trek Into Darkness." The image shows the deadly new villain that Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise must thwart.
Is Benedict Cumberbatch playing the part of Khan, as so many internet rumors are suggesting? Maybe he is portraying Kirk's close friend Gary Mitchell, as originally played by Gary Lockwood, in the 1966 television episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before."
When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.
With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.
As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.
And don't forget to check out the special 9-minute preview of the new Star Trek film. IMAX theaters will present a special preview of director J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek Into Darkness" this month along with the film's first movie trailer.
The footage will be shown prior to IMAX screenings of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" starting on December 14. The film excerpt will be in 3-D.
"Star Trek Into Darkness" stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve, Peter Weller and Heather Langenkamp.
