SAN DIEGO — Speculation has finally come to an end, as Ben Kingsley has been confirmed as the ominous Mandarin in next summer's "Iron Man 3." Rumors of which villain would appear in the new Marvel flick were put to rest at Comic-Con yesterday. Footage from the film revealed the Mandarin sitting on a throne.
Mandarin first appeared in Marvel Comics "Tales of Suspense #50" (1964). He is one of Earth's greatest scientific minds and exhibits superhuman abilities, most notably his supernatural precision in martial arts. His weaponry is known as the Ten Rings. Mandarin wears a collection of ten deadly rings that can yield enormous energy and grants Iron Man's archenemy massive amounts of power including ice, flame and electro blasts.
"Iron Man 3" is slated to hit theaters on May 3, 2013. The film stars Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man/Tony Stark), Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts), Don Cheadle (Rhodes/War Machine), Jon Favreau (Happy Hogan), Ben Kingsley (Mandarin), Guy Pearce (Aldrich Killian), Rebecca Hall (Maya Hansen), William Sadler (Sal Kennedy) and Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill).
