NEW YORK — Shortstop Didi Gregorius hit a 2-run single to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning with the Baltimore Orioles (15-8). The dirty birds led 4-2 going into the final inning of play, but couldn't stop the red-hot New York Yankees (15-8) from sending the game into extra innings 4-4.
Matt Holiday got things rolling for the Yankees in the bottom of the first inning with a solo homer and then Chase Headley recorded an RBI-single in the bottom of the third to give New York a 2-1 advantage.
Orioles fought back though and scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead. But Gregorius bailed out the Bronx bombers in regulation to give the team new life.
In the top of the 11th inning, with two outs, Mark Trumbo hit an RBI-single to give Baltimore the lead again. Welington Castillo then put the game away with an RBI-single of his own. An additional run scored on an error, as the dirty birds escaped the series sweep, 7-4.
The Yankees and Orioles are now tied for the lead in the A.L. East
