Opening of 'Posey' at the Norbeta Philbrook Gallery, Jun 21st.
Mixed media artist and photographer John Rankine's latest show opened at the Norberta Philbrook Gallery on June 21st, in Eureka Springs. 'Posey' is a collection of 16 small photographs of flowers ranging from the highly wrought peony, to the wraithlike and ethereal Japanese poppy. These images are familiar, yet striking; we have seen these flowers a thousand times, and yet, never quite like this.
'Posy' seems like a step, or diversion, around Rankine's usual work, which often has a fin de siècle quality that is often unsettling and a little spooky; what we see is beautiful, but the focus is morbid and macabre, and without any imposing moral lessons. The images in 'Posy', conversely, are filled with a perceptible spirituality that is simultaneously abstract, yet peaceable. It is a difficult trick to pull off, but Rankine does it.
'Posey' will be at the Norberta Philbrook Gallery in Eureka Springs until June 30th. The gallery is located at 34 North Main Street.
