Books in Bloom at the Crescent Hotel, 2013
Kathy Reichs, a best selling author and creator of FOX TV's hit crime drama, Bones, headlines this year's Books in Bloom festival beginning at noon at the Crescent Hotel on May 18th. Bones premiered on FOX in 2005, and is a formula driven program that features forensic anthropology and archaeology to solve murders.
Bones stars actress Emily Deschanel as Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan, who's character is based on author Reichs' real life work experience as a forensic anthropologist. Reichs, and her daughter writer Kerry Reichs---a frequent contributor to the television program---will appear from 2:30 to 3:20 PM in the Crescent's Conservatory. The title of their presentation is Writing in Their Bones, in which they discuss writing, family, Hollywood, and strong female characters. Both will be available to sign books and answer questions.
Books in Bloom is celebrated nationally for the quality of the writers it attracts to the annual festival. Past presenters have included mass market best sellers Lawrence Block, J.A. Jance, Jeffrey Deaver, Dana Stabenow, and extraordinary writers of literary fiction such as Daniel Woodrell and Donald Harington. This year, headliner Reichs is joined by novelist Elizabeth Berg, historian Michael Sheldon, and New York Times bestseller Terry Brooks; Brooks has written 23 fantasy novels with more than 21,000,000 copies sold.
Joining these authors are well-regarded writers with deep Arkansas roots, such as naturalist Steven Foster, Denise Parkinson, historian Mark Christ, food and travel writer Kat Robinson, and film maker Brian Walter, who will discuss his documentary, Stay More: The World of Donald Harington and the enduring legacies of the 'Nabokov of the Ozarks.' The Festival Schedule runs all afternoon, rain or shine.
Now celebrating its 8th year, Books in Bloom was established by the Carroll and Madison Public Library Foundation to promote the value of books and reading. Beginning in 2006, Books in Bloom has become an elegant garden party, a literary festival, and an intimate meeting point for writers and readers. It is also a superlative instance of what can happen when volunteers, sponsors, community activists, and local institutions like our public libraries work together.
Books in Bloom is a FREE event. Tickets are not needed for any of the presentations. The Festival begins at 12 Noon. Come early and spend the day with these inspiring writers in the gracious setting of The 1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa in charming Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
