The Holiday Island Photography Guild toured the Eureka Spring's Farmers' Market on June 26th to meet local farmers and take pictures of produce, fresh baked goods, jams and jellies, and the fresh eggs from Julius Kovac's My Hens are Laying for You poultry farm, located just south of Highway 62 in Berryville. Market Manager Frank Rebiejo conducted the tour and facilitated introductions.

The HI photographers were responding to Carroll County Fresh's photography contest which is going on now, and until October 15th, 2012. CCF is looking for "photos of food, farms, and farming" to use for the 2013 Carroll County Fresh Calendar, and as graphic design elements for next year's marketing materials. Winners of the contest will win cash prizes and will be exhibited at a Eureka Springs Art gallery during Thanksgiving week this fall.

"When Carroll County Fresh contacted me about the photography contest," said Steve Shogren, President of the Holiday Island Photography Guild, "I knew our members would be interested. The contest's rules require a focus on celebrating locally produced and processed foods, and on the people who do the producing and processing. We love food, we love the Ozarks, and we love photography. It all fits together."

Shogren also talked about the opportunity for photographers to "get off the main roads, and visit some of the farms and farmers who grow our food. We're grateful to CCF," he said, "for the chance to see some of the mostly hidden areas of our beautiful county."

For more information about how to enter the Carroll County Fresh 2012 Photography Contest visit the CCF website hyperlinked above, or tune into The Ozark Harvest Radio Hour this Saturday morning to hear an extended conversation with Steve Shogren.

Ubiquitous is a word that means "everywhere." We all know that there are lots of pigs in the world. Some good pigs like Wilbur in Charlotte's Web...and some bad pigs too, like the pigs in Orwell's Animal Farm. I have a picture of a beautiful Yorkshire hog diving off a board into a pretty county pond. The pig is smiling. He is a good pig. Good pigs are everywhere. Happy, friendly, useful pigs. And then there are the bad pigs. Remember when you mother admonished you? "Don't be a pig!" she'd command. She was telling you not to be selfish, and to think of other people. Your mom (and my mom) hoped that we would consider the feelings and rights of other people. This blog is about good things and bad things: good and bad things happening in Carroll County, good and bad books, good and bad food. Thanks for taking a look.
